Seasonal disconnects between saprobic and mycorrhizal sporocarp communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains

چکیده
The southern Appalachian Mountains in the United States are heavily forested with diverse forest types and vegetation structures is generally considered a biodiversity hotspot. Fungal sporocarp investigations this region not new, but multi-year interseasonal into community patterns rare. Using 4-year (2014–2017) repeated monthly macrofungal sampling dataset (May–October) across an elevational gradient (associated structure), we queried community, seasonal, guild ecological patterns. In doing so, (1) demonstrate temporal disconnect between saprobic ectomycorrhizal taxa, (2) describe increased variability growing season, (3) explore individual taxa occurrences seasons examine co-occurrence guilds. Further, congruence metabarcoding fungal datasets advocate utility of both schemes.

Diversity, abundance and community network structure in sporocarp-associated beetle communities of the central Appalachian Mountains.
Although arthropods are abundant and diverse in and on macrofungal sporocarps, their associations with fungi seldom have been described at a community level. We examined sporocarp-associated beetle communities in two primary sites in the Appalachian Mountains and foothills, assessing beetle diversity and abundance in relation to study site, sampling season (early vs. late summer), and sporocarp...

The high altitude spruce—fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poiret.—Picea rubens Sarg.) forests of the southern Appalachian Mountains. USA, experience frequent cloud immersion. Recent studies indicate that cloud bases may have risen over the past 30 years, resulting in less frequent forest cloud immersion, and that further increases in cloud base height are likely in the event of continued climate warm...
متن کاملMeasuring Environmental Quality in the Southern Appalachian Mountains
This study presents a method for valuing recreational environmental quality in the forests of the southeastern United States. The paper offers a method for choosing, measuring, and valuing forest attributes. Surveys and popular recreation literature are used to identify forest attributes that contribute to recreational quality. Standard ecological techniques are employed to measure levels of th...
متن کاملHigh-Elevation Rock Outcrop Vegetation of the Southern Appalachian Mountains
Species composition patterns and vegetation-environment relationships were quantified for high-elevation rock outcrops of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, an infrequent and insular habitat in a forested landscape. Outcrops occur over a wide geographic range encompassing extensive variation in both geology and climate. Geographic-scale factors interact with site-scale factors to produce varia...
متن کاملQuantifying ecosystem geomorphology of the southern Appalachian Mountains
Geomorphology is a dominant factor influencing vegetation distribution in the southern Appalachians, and quantifying landform characteristics is increasingly important for forest ecosystem classification. This study used slope gradient and two previously published geomorphic indices, terrain shape index and landform index that quantify landform shape and protection, to develop a field-based lan...
